Prepare the garment without changing its shape

Choose a clean, plain surface large enough for the entire item. Remove lint and arrange sleeves or straps so they can be understood. Follow the care label if you steam or press it; do not assume every fabric tolerates heat.

Avoid pinning a waist smaller or pulling a hem wider to create an attractive outline. If you fold part of the garment for a styled image, also provide an unfolded view. Keep the difference between presentation and actual proportions visible.

Keep the camera parallel and the item complete

Position the phone above the center, with the lens plane roughly parallel to the surface. A diagonal camera angle can make one end appear wider. Use the camera grid to compare the sides, but do not stretch the file afterward to force symmetry.

Stand safely beside the setup; do not climb onto an unstable chair. If an overhead view is awkward, move the garment to a lower surface. Take a wider frame so cuffs, hems and straps have breathing room before cropping.

1. Full front: show the neckline, both sleeves and the hem.
2. Full back: keep the scale and lighting similar to the front.
3. Construction: photograph the closure, lining or seam that matters to the buyer.
4. Condition: show actual wear or damage without hiding it under a styling fold.

Make texture and condition readable

Etsy's seller guidance distinguishes detail photos from scale photos and notes that close-ups can communicate imperfections. Use that distinction to decide what is missing from your listing rather than adding more versions of the same front view.

Crop consistently, not aggressively

Make duplicate files for the store's intended crop. Compare several garments in the same grid before changing every image. A consistent empty margin is usually easier to manage than forcing items with very different proportions to fill the same square.
